Katsuo-ji is the temple people come to when they need to win something — an exam, a match, a contract. Its grounds are covered in thousands of small red daruma dolls left behind by people whose wish came true, tucked into every wall, step and tree root; you buy one, fill in one eye, and paint the second when you get what you asked for. From there the day crosses into Kyoto: the stone lanes of Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka up to Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage, then Arashiyama in the afternoon for Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo grove.

The stone lanes up to Kiyomizu-dera, lined with tea houses and craft shops, ending at the wooden stage looking out over Kyoto.

Cross the Moon Crossing Bridge over the Katsura River, then walk the bamboo path where the stalks close overhead.
