Its grounds are covered in thousands of small red daruma dolls left behind by people whose wish came true, tucked into every wall, step and tree root; you buy one, fill in one eye, and paint the second when you get what you asked for. From there the day crosses into Kyoto: the stone lanes of Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka up to Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage, then Arashiyama in the afternoon for Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo grove.
