Kamikochi is a highland valley closed to private cars, so the only way in is the shuttle over Hirayu Pass — and what waits at the end is the Azusa River running clear turquoise under Kappa Bridge, with the Hotaka range standing straight above it. You walk the valley floor on flat riverside paths, not a climb. The night is spent in Hakuba, and day two takes in the wide-open Happo highlands before the run back to Tokyo.

The shuttle stops here first. Bleached tree trunks stand in still water with Mt Yake smoking gently behind — the picture that made Kamikochi famous.

Kappa Bridge & the Azusa riverside path · 120 min
The wooden suspension bridge at the heart of Kamikochi, with the Hotaka peaks filling the sky upstream. Flat riverside walking, no climbing.

Arrive in Hakuba village for the night. Dinner is free time — the village has ramen, izakaya and soba within walking distance.

¥15,000 per person includes: round-trip coach from Tokyo Station, the Kamikochi shuttle (private vehicles are banned in the valley), one night's hotel in Hakuba, and an English-speaking tour leader. Not included: meals, the optional Happo ropeway (about ¥1,700–3,000, paid on site), and personal spending. IMPORTANT: Kamikochi sits at 1,500 m and Hakuba higher still — an October or November morning can drop below 5°C while Tokyo is still 20°C, so warm layers and a rain shell are essential. Expect 4–6 km of flat walking per day; wear trainers. Foliage timing varies year to year and cannot be guaranteed for a specific date. Stop order may change with traffic and weather.
