For about three weeks each October, the kochia bushes on Miharashi Hill turn from green to a deep burning red — tens of thousands of them, packed shoulder to shoulder over a hill that looks out to the Pacific. It is one of the few autumn sights in Japan that is genuinely unlike anywhere else. The day pairs it with the Ushiku Great Buddha, at 120 m one of the tallest statues on earth, where a lift takes you up inside the chest for a view over the Kanto plain.
