Overview
Honke Bankyu stands beside the Yunishigawa river in a remote valley of Nikko, where the family traces its roots to Heike clan refugees and has run the inn since 1666. The spring said to be the origin of Yunishigawa Onsen rises beneath its open-air bath, and all baths use water straight from the source, including two riverside private rock baths and the private tubs of eight suites. Dinner is taken after crossing a vine bridge to a log-built hall, where river fish and mountain dishes are grilled over irori charcoal hearths alongside kaiseki courses. In winter an illuminated ice waterfall is visible from the lobby.
