Overview
Tamanoyu began in 1953 as a retreat for a Zen temple and now places sixteen rooms, most of them detached, among a planted woodland of oak and maple a short walk from Yufuin's Yunotsubo street. Most rooms pair a tatami room with a twin bedroom, and every room has a garden or terrace and an indoor hinoki bath fed by the inn's own free-flowing spring; the public baths add open-air pools facing Mt Yufu. Dinner is served in the Budouya dining room: country cooking from local produce, with a choice of mains such as charcoal-grilled Oita wagyu, local chicken hotpot or soft-shelled turtle.
