Okamotoya

Okamotoya has stood in Beppu's hillside Myoban district since 1875, and the family helped build the local yunohana bath-salt trade whose production method is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural property. Its baths run a self-flowing, milky-blue acidic sulfur spring with nothing added, including a garden open-air bath overlooking the Myoban Bridge. Fifteen rooms range from retro 6- and 8-mat rooms to renovated Japanese-Western rooms, three with their own indoor onsen tub. Dinner is Oita kaiseki with dishes steamed in the volcanic vents, served in a dining room with city and bay views. Longer 'wellness retreat' stays of 3-7 nights are also offered.
