Yagyu no Sho began as a Kyoto-kaiseki restaurant in Shiba-Shirokane, Tokyo, in 1959 and opened as a ryokan in the bamboo groves of Shuzenji in 1970; the name comes from the founder's kendo. Its 15 sukiya-style rooms, renovated with traditional plaster and joinery for the 40th anniversary, all differ in layout and range from 60 to 122 m². Every room has a free-flowing onsen bath, open-air, semi-open-air or hinoki, and two large open-air baths swap between men and women daily. Meals are served in the rooms. Shuzenji is reachable directly from Tokyo on the Odoriko express.
About 140 min from Tokyo on the direct Odoriko limited express to Shuzenji (or about 90-105 min via Shinkansen); by car about 30 min from Numazu IC / Nagaizumi-Numazu IC via toll roads.
