Overview
Sumiya was founded in the early Taisho era and occupies a quiet sukiya-style building at Fuyacho-Sanjo, walking distance from the subway, Hankyu and Keihan lines. Rooms are tatami with Kitayama cedar posts and earthen walls; six have low tatami beds, and every room has a bath of fragrant koyamaki wood, as does the free private family bath. It is not a hot-spring inn. Dinner is Kyoto kaiseki built on seasonal Kyoto vegetables, brought to the room one dish at a time. The inn keeps a tea room: on the 7th and 17th of each month guests are invited to an after-dinner tea gathering, and a matcha experience can be booked.
