Overview

Hiiragiya is on Fuyacho Street in central Kyoto, a five-minute walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station. The family business began here in 1818 and turned to lodging in 1861. The wooden main building, noted as a registered tangible cultural property, has sixteen rooms from the late Edo to Showa periods, many with small gardens and bathrooms using koya-maki tubs and stained glass; a seven-room wing added in 2006 includes one room with beds. There is no hot spring, but two private family baths are available. Dinner is Kyo-kaiseki and breakfast features yudofu. Novelist Yasunari Kawabata wrote of staying here often.
