Overview
Mikawaya Ryokan was founded in 1883, and its founder is credited with starting the Kowakidani hot spring. It now belongs to Fujita Kanko's Hakone Kowakien group. Its Taisho-era main building, with a karahafu gabled entrance, is a registered cultural property where guests such as Takehisa Yumeji, the poets Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, and Sun Yat-sen stayed. There are 25 rooms across the main building, an annex and detached Hanare, all with tatami and twin beds, and ten with private open-air onsen baths. The inn's own mild alkaline spring flows into the large baths and a free private bath, and dinner centres on the house Mikawaya hot pot.
