Overview

Matsuzakaya Honten has operated at Ashinoyu, one of the old 'Hakone Seven Hot Springs', since 1662 and hosted Meiji figures such as Kido Takayoshi and Katsu Kaishu. Its 21 rooms are spread over five buildings: a Meiji-era wing, a relocated Taisho-period villa, a 1962 wing, and detached rooms described as a former imperial villa. The inn's own source, which turns from emerald green to milky white, runs into every bath without added water or heat. There are men's and women's baths and five private open-air baths. Dinner is a 'shukuba kaiseki' inspired by post-town cooking, served in semi-private rooms.
