Overview

Naraya has stood next to the Yubatake, the steaming centrepiece of Kusatsu, since 1877. It draws the Shirahata source, one of Kusatsu's oldest, lets it cool overnight in on-site tanks and has yumori bath keepers adjust flow and stir the water by hand. Two public baths swap between men and women overnight, and three ceramic private baths can be booked on arrival. Corridors are laid with tatami, and the Senyu-tei rooms mix bedrooms with Japanese sitting areas; one maisonette has its own semi-open-air bath. Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki of about ten dishes served in three private dining rooms with table seating.
