Rekishi no Yado Okyakuya

Okyakuya claims about 300 years on the same site on Kurokawa's riverside street and served as an official lodging for the Hosokawa lords of Higo. The two-storey wooden building has grown through many extensions into a maze of corridors and 13 plain Japanese rooms, some on corners above the Tanohara River. Its own spring feeds seven baths, including a semi-open-air bath with a 130 cm standing tub and two free family baths. The inn grows its own rice, vegetables and herbs, makes miso and vinegar without additives, and serves dinners such as Kumamoto red beef steamed in a seiro, mostly in a partitioned hall.
