Overview

Hozantei stands at the top of the Kurokawa Onsen valley beside the source stream of the Chikugo River. Its ten rooms are all detached cottages, nine with an open-air bath and one with an indoor bath, all filled with the inn's own sulfur spring flowing without recirculation. Two large open-air baths, Tengu no Yu and Sennyo no Yu, swap between men and women and have a switch that turns off the lights for stargazing. Dinner is a creative kaiseki with horse sashimi and a three-meat hoe-grill of Higo beef, pork and local chicken, served in private dining rooms. A self-service bar stocks Japanese sake, shochu and wine.
