Rekishi no Yado Kanaguya

Kanaguya stands in the middle of Shibu Onsen, a stone-paved hot spring street below Shiga Kogen, about ten minutes by bus from Yudanaka Station. Its four-storey wooden Saigetsu-ro and a 130-tatami banquet hall first built in 1936 are registered cultural properties, and every one of the 29 tatami rooms is built differently. The inn draws water from four private sources and runs eight baths, all fed directly from the source: a rooftop open-air bath, a stained-glass 'Roman' bath, a Kamakura-style bath and five private baths that guests use free without booking. Meals are served in historic halls rather than in rooms. Guests may also use Shibu's nine public bathhouses.

Direct bookings, 2-14 guests: 100% same day/no-show, 80% day before, then 50%/30%/20% at earlier cut-offs up to 7 days; groups of 15+ have longer schedules (up to 30 days). Weather is not grounds for waiver unless all transport is suspended.
