Overview
KAI Hakone sits along the old Tokaido highway in Hakone-Yumoto, roughly seven minutes by car from the station. All 34 rooms face the Sukumo River and Mount Yusaka, and the local-style rooms use Hakone yosegi marquetry and travel-themed art. The public bath is a hinoki tub in a room whose outer wall is left open, framing the valley like a picture. A tea house in the courtyard serves drinks through the day. Dinner is kaiseki with a nod to Hakone's Meiji-era Western influence, such as a beef hot pot. A suite and several Western rooms add private terrace baths.
