Overview

Hotel Iya Onsen clings to the side of the Iya Valley in western Tokushima, a gorge linked with Heike refugee legends. Its signature is a five-minute cable car ride down a 42-degree slope to open-air baths beside the Iya River, fed by free-flowing alkaline sulphur water; a private riverside bath can be booked. Upstairs there is a view bath facing the valley. The 17 rooms are individually styled in Japanese-Western fashion, several with open-air baths. Dinner is kaiseki using Iya soba, Iya tofu, Awa beef and local game, served in a dining hall painted with murals by Hideki Kimura.
