About this experience

Takao is the most-climbed mountain on earth — three million people a year, nearly all of them Tokyoites on a day off. There are six trails; this route takes a quiet one, through old cedar forest past a hillside temple where monks still train.

Takao is the most-climbed mountain on earth: around three million people a year, nearly all of them Tokyoites on a day off. That number sounds like crowds — but it's because almost everyone takes the SAME path, the paved Trail 1.

This tour takes a different one. Old cedar forest, steeper, and for the first stretch you'll barely pass anyone. The hardest section falls inside the first hour, deliberately — once it's behind you the rest is simply walking. Partway up is Yakuoin temple on the slope, where monks still genuinely train rather than open the doors for visitors; with the right timing you'll hear the chanting from outside. At the summit, on a clear day, Mount Fuji — and winter, not summer, is when it's clearest.

Soba lunch at the top, then down by cable car — the ticket is included, and descending by cable car is intentional: knees take more load going down than up. Six hours, groups of up to ten. Walking shoes with grip are needed; rated demanding.

Highlights

  • The most-climbed mountain on earth, and it's inside Tokyo
  • A quiet trail instead of the crowded Trail 1
  • A hillside temple where monks still train — not a monument
  • Cable car down, so your knees are spared
