Overview
Tsutaya's predecessor, the Matsumotoya, sheltered the late-Edo activist Katsura Kogoro (later Kido Takayoshi) in 1864-65. The building burned in the 1925 earthquake, and the 'Katsura room' was recreated on the same spot; the lobby shows his calligraphy and letters. The main building has ten wooden tatami rooms, each laid out differently, and a large bath with Kinosaki spring water. Two annexes - the four-room Genbuso and the ten-room Seirantei in a quiet valley - are rented whole by groups. Dinner is a Tajima kaiseki with local beef and red snow crab, or full crab courses in winter, served at tables in a hall.
