A 1.3-kilometre market street with over 400 shops, fifteen minutes by train from Shibuya, and virtually no foreign visitors on it. This is where Tokyo actually buys dinner: karaage sold by weight, grilled skewers, taiyaki, a standing soba counter.
A 1.3-kilometre market street with over four hundred shops, fifteen minutes by train from Shibuya, and virtually no foreign visitors on it. This is what the word shotengai actually means: not an attraction, but the place an entire neighbourhood buys dinner on the way home.
Arriving at five in the afternoon catches it at its liveliest. The first stop is karaage sold BY WEIGHT — bought hot, eaten on the spot, exactly how people here buy it. Then a grilled-skewer stand tucked into the side of the street, a taiyaki shop that bakes them one at a time rather than six to a mould, and a standing soba counter — Tokyo's five-minute dinner, which visitors almost never try.
In between come the pickle shop and the fishmonger, not to eat but to watch what a neighbourhood doing its actual shopping looks like. It ends with a drink at the far end. Six tastings across two and a half hours, flat the whole way, and per person it's the cheapest food tour on the list.
