About this experience

Arriving at five in the afternoon catches it at its liveliest. The first stop is karaage sold BY WEIGHT — bought hot, eaten on the spot, exactly how people here buy it. Then a grilled-skewer stand tucked into the side of the street, a taiyaki shop that bakes them one at a time rather than six to a mould, and a standing soba counter — Tokyo's five-minute dinner, which visitors almost never try.

In between come the pickle shop and the fishmonger, not to eat but to watch what a neighbourhood doing its actual shopping looks like. It ends with a drink at the far end. Six tastings across two and a half hours, flat the whole way, and per person it's the cheapest food tour on the list.
