About this experience

The lake Fuji photographs best from: the north shore for the mirrored cone, Oishi Park's flower beds in the foreground, the Kachi Kachi ropeway for height, and the Chureito pagoda for the postcard frame. Sunrise options leave Shinjuku early to reach the shore before the haze builds.

Lake Kawaguchi is the most visited of the Fuji Five Lakes, and for good reason: its northern shore faces the mountain across open water, so on calm days the cone is reflected almost perfectly. Oishi Park lines that shore with seasonal flower beds, lavender in early summer and red kochia bushes in autumn. Across the water, the Kachi Kachi Ropeway lifts visitors to a lookout above the town, named after a local folk tale about a rabbit and a raccoon dog.

Most departures are from Shinjuku, and two options start at hotels around the lake for those already staying there. Shorter versions focus on the north shore and Oishi Park, or pair the ropeway with a lake cruise. Longer days add the Oshino Hakkai springs or the Chureito Pagoda, and a 10-hour loop strings together 6 viewpoints. A sunrise option leaves Shinjuku very early, aiming to reach Oishi in the first clear light before the haze builds.

Fuji is shy: visibility is best in late autumn and winter, while summer haze and rain often hide the mountain completely. Early mornings are usually clearest and the lake is calmest then, giving the best reflections. Walking is light, mostly along promenades and short paths, though the Chureito viewpoint involves a long staircase. Photographers should bring a wide lens for the reflections and a longer one for the ropeway lookout across the lake.
