About this experience
Itsukushima Shrine is built on stilts over the tideline so that at high water the vermilion O-torii appears to float; at low tide you can walk out to its feet. The ropeway climbs Mount Misen for the Seto Inland Sea. Combo options add the Hiroshima Peace Park.
Itsukushima Shrine was laid out over the tidal flats of Miyajima so that the sea itself becomes part of the building. Its vermilion corridors stand on posts, and the great O-torii in the bay is not buried in the seabed but stays upright under its own weight. At high tide the gate and halls appear to float; at low tide you can walk out across the sand to the torii's base. UNESCO lists the shrine together with the forested slopes behind it.
The day starts with the short ferry crossing, which is included along with shrine admission. The 4-hour option from Hiroshima covers the shrine, the O-torii and Momijidani, the maple valley behind it. The 6-hour version rides the ropeway up Mount Misen for views across the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Longer days add Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome: 10 hours from Hiroshima or Osaka, or 12 hours from Osaka or Kyoto.
Tide times shape the visit, and the guide checks the table to decide whether you see the gate floating or walk to it. Wild deer roam the streets and will investigate paper bags, so keep maps and snacks out of reach. From the top ropeway station, the path to the 535 m summit is steep and uneven. Grilled oysters and maple-leaf cakes are the island's classic foods, and November turns Momijidani deep red.
