About this experience

The long west-Tokyo loop: out from Shinjuku past the walls of Shinjuku Gyoen, down Omotesando and through Harajuku to the Shibuya Crossing, then back north by Miyashita Park and Yoyogi Park to the twin towers of the Metropolitan Government Building and the lights of Kabukicho. Ninety minutes for drivers who want more than one district.

Shinjuku and Shibuya are Tokyo's two biggest centres, only a few kilometres apart, and most visitors travel between them underground. This route links them on the surface: skyscrapers, parks and shopping streets in one continuous drive.

You leave Shinjuku past the walls of Shinjuku Gyoen, drop down to Omotesando and Harajuku and reach the Shibuya Crossing, then head back north by Miyashita Park and Yoyogi Park. The last stretch runs under the twin towers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and into the lights around Kabukicho. At ninety minutes it is the longest drive on the west side of the city.

Pick it if one district is not enough: you see how the city's two main hubs connect, with three parks along the way.

Shinjuku is easy to explore after dark once the drive is done: Omoide Yokocho's tiny bars by the station, the free observation rooms in the Metropolitan Government Building, and the neon of Kabukicho. Shinjuku Gyoen, passed on the route, is a large garden worth a separate visit by day.
