For anyone with one day on the San-in coast who wants the dunes at their emptiest and a proper seafood lunch, without a car.

Tottori Sand Dunes, the Umanose ridge
From Tottori Station the local bus to the dunes takes about 20 minutes; aim to be on the sand by 8:00, before the wind picks up and the tour coaches arrive. Walk straight across the bowl and up the Umanose, the 40-metre ridge above the Sea of Japan, where the wind draws fresh ripples every morning. Go barefoot in spring and autumn; in summer the sand burns by 10:00.

Sand Museum
A five-minute walk from the dune entrance, the Sand Museum shows room-sized sculptures carved from packed dune sand by an international team, on a new theme most years. It opens mid-morning and closes for a few weeks each winter while the next exhibition is built, so check the season before you go. The oasis viewpoint behind the museum looks back over the dunes.

3Karo fish market, crab lunch
Take the bus back toward the city and get off at Karo port, about 15 minutes, around 12:00. The market hall sells whatever the boats landed that morning; from November to March that means matsuba snow crab, and the upstairs restaurants will steam or grill one while you wait. Outside crab season the kaisen-don bowls of raw fish over rice are the safer order.

4Uradome coast boat cruise
Bus east from Tottori Station for about 40 minutes to the Uradome coast, part of the San-in Kaigan Geopark, where the boat cruises leave from a small jetty from spring to autumn. Forty minutes of granite islets, sea caves and pine-topped rocks, with water clear enough to see the bottom. Sea kayak rentals on the beach are the other way to see it in summer.

Tottori Castle ruins and Kyusho Park
Back in the city around 17:00, walk 15 minutes north-east from the station, or take any bus to the prefectural office, to the stone ramparts of Tottori Castle on the hillside. The keep is gone, but the terraces give a view over the town to the dunes and the sea, and the cherry trees of Kyusho Park below are the city's spring gathering spot.

Tips
Buses do everything here: the dune bus, the Karo port bus and the Uradome bus all leave from the front of Tottori Station, and a one-day bus pass is sold at the tourist counter inside.
Sandals or bare feet on the dunes, trainers everywhere else; sand gets into any shoe within a minute, and the ridge climb is easier without them.
Crab is a winter dish: from November to March Karo market is the reason to come, while in summer the market is about squid and the kaisen-don.
Shoot the ridge from the bowl before 9:00, when the sand still holds the night's wind ripples and there are no footprints between you and the sea.
