Shibuya & Shinjuku
A forest shrine, the scramble, and neon alleys
For first-timers who want the two most famous districts of west Tokyo in one walkable, train-light day.
1Meiji Jingu
Start around 8:30 at Harajuku Station and walk the gravel path under the giant torii into the cedar forest before the crowds. The main hall is free; the Inner Garden costs a little extra. Leave through the same gate and turn onto Takeshita Street for crepes and a look at teen fashion.
1–1.5 HoursCost: Free- 2
Omotesando & Cat Street
Around 10:30 walk the zelkova-lined Omotesando boulevard, then duck into Cat Street, a low-rise lane of small boutiques and coffee stands that leads you gently downhill toward Shibuya on foot in about 20 minutes.
1–1.5 HoursCost: Free - 3
Shibuya Scramble Crossing & Shibuya Sky
Cross the world's busiest intersection around noon, then ride up to the open-air Shibuya Sky deck on top of Shibuya Scramble Square; book a timed slot online days ahead, sunset slots sell out first. Lunch in the basement food halls of the station buildings.
1.5–2 HoursCost: ¥2,500–3,000
4Omoide Yokocho
Take the JR Yamanote Line two stops to Shinjuku (about 5 minutes) and, from around 17:30, squeeze into the smoky yakitori alley by the west exit. Counters seat six to eight; order a few skewers and a drink, then move on so the next person gets a seat.
1 HourCost: ¥1,500–3,000
5Kabukicho & Golden Gai
Walk ten minutes east past the Godzilla head into Kabukicho's neon, then into Golden Gai, six narrow lanes of two-hundred tiny bars. Look for bars that post prices at the door; a cover charge of a few hundred to a thousand yen is normal. Last trains from Shinjuku run until around midnight.
1.5–2 HoursCost: ¥1,000–2,000
Day 1 Estimated Cost
- Food & drinks¥4,000–6,000
- Transport (IC card)¥300–600
- Admissions¥2,500–3,000
Tips
Use a Suica or PASMO card: the whole day is one Yamanote stop plus walking, so a day pass is not worth it.
Expect 12–15 km on foot: Meiji Jingu's gravel and the Omotesando–Shibuya walk add up; wear real walking shoes.
Eat lunch early in Shibuya: the station food halls fill from 12:00; for dinner, yakitori in Omoide Yokocho is the point of the evening.
Best crossing photo: the second-floor window of the station-front cafés or the Shibuya Sky deck at dusk, when the lights come on.
