For museum-goers and skyline chasers who want a day that stays open late, since Roppongi's galleries and observation decks keep going long after most of Tokyo has closed.

National Art Center, Tokyo
Take the Chiyoda Line to Nogizaka, whose exit leads straight into the museum; arrive around 10:00 as it opens. The building itself is the first exhibit, a rippling glass wall with inverted concrete cones holding cafés in the atrium. There is no permanent collection, only large touring exhibitions, so check what is on. It is closed on Tuesdays.

Tokyo Midtown, Suntory Museum and 21_21
Walk ten minutes east to Tokyo Midtown. The Suntory Museum of Art on the upper floors shows Japanese craft, lacquer, glass and textiles in a hushed wooden gallery, and 21_21 Design Sight in the park behind is a low Tadao Ando building with a single sharp design show at a time. Eat lunch in the Midtown basement, where the food floor is better than it needs to be.

Azabudai Hills
A 15-minute walk south-east through the embassy streets brings you to Azabudai Hills, a cluster of curved towers and terraced gardens around Japan's tallest building. The digital art museum in the basement needs a booked slot and a couple of hours; if you skip it, the central lawn, the bookshop and the galleries of the Garden Plaza are free to wander. Arrive around 15:30.

4Tokyo Tower at dusk
Tokyo Tower is ten minutes' walk downhill from Azabudai; time it for the half hour before sunset. The main deck ticket buys the classic view, but the better plan is to stay on the ground: Shiba Park and the grounds of Zojoji temple next door frame the orange lattice against the sky, and the lights switch on at dusk. In summer the tower glows white, in winter warm orange.

5Mori Art Museum and Tokyo City View
Walk 20 minutes back up to Roppongi Hills, or take the Oedo Line from Akabanebashi to Roppongi. The Mori Art Museum on the top floors of Mori Tower stays open into the late evening most nights, and the ticket usually includes the Tokyo City View deck one floor down, which at this hour is a sea of lights with Tokyo Tower glowing in the middle of it. Tips
Nogizaka in, Roppongi out: the Chiyoda, Hibiya and Oedo lines all serve the triangle, and everything in between is a walk of 10 to 20 minutes.
Museum floors are hard and the Azabudai slopes are steep; wear cushioned shoes, and carry a light layer, the galleries are cold in summer.
Lunch in the Midtown basement and dinner in Roppongi Hills; both complexes have food floors that avoid the tourist pricing on the main Roppongi crossing.
Tokyo Tower from the Zojoji gate at dusk, and the tower again from City View after dark; the museums allow photos only where signed.
