A slow day in west Tokyo: coffee and shops on Nakamichi-dori, swan boats on Inokashira Pond, the Ghibli Museum, and yakitori in Harmonica Yokocho.

Park, museum and a yakitori alley to finish
For anyone with a Ghibli Museum reservation who wants to turn it into a full, relaxed day in one of Tokyo's most liveable neighbourhoods.

Nakamichi-dori shops and coffee
Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku, about 15 minutes on a rapid, and leave Kichijoji by the north exit around 10:00. Nakamichi-dori runs west from the station: a long, low street of independent bakeries, ceramics shops, tiny galleries and coffee roasters. Get a pastry and a pour-over, and note anything you want to buy on the way back.

2Inokashira Park
Cut south through the park entrance beside Marui and drop down the steps to Inokashira Pond, ringed by cherry trees and weeping willows. Swan-shaped pedal boats and rowing boats rent by the half hour; on weekends street musicians and craft stalls line the bridge. The small Benzaiten shrine on the island is worth a look before you continue west.

3Ghibli Museum
Follow the park path west for about 15 minutes to the museum, its ivy-covered walls and Totoro at the ticket window announcing it. Entry is by timed reservation bought in advance, sold out weeks ahead, so book the moment your dates are fixed. Inside are the animation-machine room, the rooftop robot from Laputa, a short film shown only here, and no photography anywhere indoors.

Sun Road and a menchi-katsu
Walk back through the park to Kichijoji station and cross into Sun Road, the covered arcade north of the tracks, around 15:30. Join the queue at the butcher's counter for a hot minced-beef menchi-katsu, a Kichijoji institution, and eat it standing like everyone else. The arcade and the side streets are good for cheap souvenirs and drugstore runs.

Harmonica Yokocho
Next to Sun Road is Harmonica Yokocho, a grid of alleys from the postwar black market days, now lined with dozens of bars and counters each seating a handful of people. Yakitori, oden, gyoza and cheap beer are the standards; sit where there is a stool and move on after two dishes. It fills quickly after 18:00 on weekends.

Tips
Kichijoji is on both the JR Chuo Line and the Keio Inokashira Line: the Keio route from Shibuya is slower but ends in the park, which is a nicer arrival.
The museum is a 15-minute walk through the park from the station, and the paths are unpaved in places; comfortable flats, and an umbrella in June.
Book the museum slot first, then plan meals around it; Harmonica Yokocho counters take cash and expect you to order a drink with each dish.
No photos inside the museum, but the rooftop robot garden and the exterior are allowed; the pond is best in early morning light or under cherry blossom.
