For anyone with a day in Sendai who wants one of Japan's three famous views without a rush, and two of Tohoku's best things to eat along the way.

Zuihoden Mausoleum
Start in Sendai with the Loople sightseeing bus from the station's west exit, 15 minutes to Zuihoden, the ornate lacquered and gilded mausoleum of Date Masamune, the one-eyed lord who founded the city. It sits on a cedar-covered hill up a long stone stair. Be there for opening in mid-morning and you will have the carved gables mostly to yourself.

Gyutan lunch in Sendai
Bus back to the station for an early lunch around 11:30 of gyutan, thick-cut beef tongue grilled over charcoal, Sendai's signature dish; the set comes with barley rice, oxtail soup and pickles. The restaurants clustered on the station's third floor are quick and good. Then take the JR Senseki Line from the same station toward Matsushima-Kaigan, about 40 minutes.

3Matsushima Bay cruise
Matsushima-Kaigan station is a five-minute walk from the pier, where sightseeing boats leave roughly every hour for a 50-minute loop among the 260 pine-topped islands that Basho found too beautiful to write about. Sit on the open upper deck for the best of it. Boats run until late afternoon; the 13:30 or 14:00 departure fits this day.

4Zuigan-ji and Entsu-in
Across the road from the pier a cedar avenue leads to Zuigan-ji, the Date family temple, whose main hall has gold-leaf sliding doors and rooms carved out of the cliff behind for meditating monks. Next door, Entsu-in has a moss and rock garden, a rose garden and a mausoleum with a small Western-style painting inside; in November the maples here are lit at night.

Godaido and grilled oysters
Walk out along the short red bridges to Godaido, the small temple hall on its own islet, for the classic view over the bay around 16:30, then cross the longer red bridge to Fukuura Island if there is light left. Finish at one of the oyster huts along the waterfront, where Matsushima oysters are grilled by the dozen from autumn to spring and scallops fill in during summer. Trains back to Sendai run through the evening.

Tips
Get off at Matsushima-Kaigan on the Senseki Line, not Matsushima on the Tohoku Line, which is a 20-minute walk from everything; the Loople bus one-day pass covers the Sendai half of the day.
The Zuihoden stair, the Zuigan-ji cliff caves and the island bridges are all steps and uneven stone: walking shoes, and a windproof layer for the open boat deck.
Gyutan in Sendai at lunch, oysters in Matsushima before the train: the oyster huts are seasonal, best from October through March, when they serve them all-you-can-eat by the half-hour.
The bay is flat-lit at midday from the boat; the better shots are Godaido's red bridges in late-afternoon light, and the islands from the Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu viewpoint above the town if you have a spare half-hour.
