For travellers passing along the Tokaido who want a Fuji day that is not Hakone or Kawaguchiko, with real food and no crowds.
1Nihondaira Yume Terrace
From Shizuoka Station the Nihondaira bus climbs through tea plantations to the plateau in about 40 minutes; take one of the first departures so you are on the terrace by 9:00, when Fuji is sharpest before the haze builds. The wooden observation deck looks over Shimizu port, Suruga Bay and the whole mountain, with tea rows in the foreground. Free, and there is a cafe.

Kunozan Toshogu by ropeway
Next to the terrace, the Nihondaira Ropeway drops across a ravine to Kunozan Toshogu, the original burial shrine of Tokugawa Ieyasu, older than the famous one in Nikko and just as lavishly gilded. The ropeway plus shrine ticket is sold together. Allow 40 minutes for the lacquered halls and the small museum of Ieyasu's belongings, then ride back up.

Shimizu fish market lunch
Take the bus down the other side to Shimizu, about 30 minutes, and head to the Kashi-no-Ichi market by the port for lunch around 12:30. Shimizu lands more frozen tuna than any port in Japan, and the stalls sell thick-cut tuna rice bowls and sakura shrimp from the bay. Sit at the counters upstairs; the queue moves fast.

4Miho no Matsubara
A bus from Shimizu Station runs out along the spit to Miho, roughly 25 minutes. The pine grove is part of the Fuji World Heritage listing: 30,000 black pines on a pebble beach with the mountain across the water. Walk the Kami no Michi avenue from Miho Shrine to the shore, then along the beach; afternoon light is soft here and the fishing boats give the scene scale.

Sumpu Castle Park and oden alley
Return to Shizuoka by bus or the JR Tokaido Line, about 10 minutes from Shimizu. Sumpu Castle Park, a short walk north of the station, is the moated site of Ieyasu's retirement castle; the reconstructed gate and turret close around dusk. Finish in Aoba Oden Yokocho, two lanes of tiny counters serving Shizuoka-style oden, dark broth and skewers dusted with fish flakes.

Tips
Buses run from both Shizuoka and Shimizu stations to Nihondaira, so the day works as a loop; a one-day bus pass is worth it if you do all five stops.
Miho beach is pebbles, not sand, and the ropeway shrine has steep stone steps; flat, grippy shoes rather than sandals.
Eat tuna at the port, not in town: the market counters serve the day's fish at half the price of a station restaurant, and sakura shrimp is a Suruga Bay speciality worth trying raw.
Fuji hides by lunchtime from spring to autumn, so shoot the terrace first thing and treat Miho as a bonus; in winter the mountain often stays out all day.
