For travellers based in Kyoto who want a castle that is not a concrete reconstruction, a lake view and a proper beef lunch, all under an hour from the city.

Hikone Castle keep
The JR Biwako Line special rapid from Kyoto reaches Hikone in about 50 minutes; the castle is a 15-minute walk from the station through the old approach. Be at the gate for opening, mid-morning, and climb through the outer moats and gate turrets to the compact three-storey keep, one of the few original ones left and a national treasure. The wooden stairs inside are almost ladders; the top window looks across Lake Biwa.

2Genkyu-en garden
Drop down the north side of the hill to Genkyu-en, the daimyo's strolling garden laid out around a pond with the keep rising above the pines. A wooden bridge crosses to a small island and the Hosho-dai teahouse serves matcha with a sweet on the veranda facing the water; order it, sit, and let a full 20 minutes go by. The garden is included in the castle combination ticket.

3Omi beef on Yume Kyobashi Castle Road
Cross the Kyobashi bridge from the castle's outer moat and you are on Yume Kyobashi Castle Road, a street rebuilt in white-walled Edo style with cafes and craft shops. Hikone sits in Omi beef country, one of the oldest wagyu brands in Japan; several restaurants here grill it at the table or serve it as a lunch bowl at a fraction of the dinner price. Sit down around 12:30.

Lake Biwa shore, or a boat to Chikubu Island
Walk 15 minutes north-west to Hikone port on the lakeshore. If the timetable suits, sightseeing boats run out to Chikubu Island, a shrine-and-temple islet in the middle of the lake, about 40 minutes each way, with a landing fee on the island. Otherwise follow the pine-lined shore path to Matsubara beach, where Lake Biwa looks like a sea and the mountains of the far shore hang in the haze.

Nagahama and Kurokabe Square
Two stops north on the JR Biwako Line, about 10 minutes, Nagahama is a former castle town whose black-plastered bank building became a glass gallery and seeded a whole quarter of glass studios, shops and cafes in old merchant houses. Walk the arcades until the shops close around dusk, try a glass-blowing session if you booked ahead, and take the train back to Kyoto in about an hour.

Tips
Take the special rapid, not the local: it halves the time from Kyoto, stops at both Hikone and Nagahama, and both are covered by a rail pass.
The keep's stairs are steep enough to need your hands, and you go in socks; wear shoes that come off easily and skip bulky bags, which have to be left below.
Omi beef at lunch is the value play: the same restaurants charge double in the evening, and a bowl of beef over rice is the way to try it under ¥3,000.
The classic frame is the keep above Genkyu-en's pond from the bridge, best in the morning; at the lake, the west-facing shore turns orange at sunset in autumn and winter.
