Ishigaki & Taketomi
Two islands, one reef, sand like flour
For travellers on Ishigaki with a rental car and a single full day who want the island's best water in the morning and the old Ryukyu village next door in the afternoon.

Kabira Bay
Drive 40 minutes north-west from Ishigaki town to Kabira and be at the viewpoint by 8:30, when the water is glassy and the tour buses have not arrived. Swimming is banned in the bay because of the pearl farms and currents, so the way in is a glass-bottom boat, half an hour over coral heads and sea turtles. The colour changes minute by minute with the clouds; wait for a gap of sun.

2Yonehara Beach, reef snorkelling
Fifteen minutes east along the north coast is Yonehara, where the reef starts a few metres from the sand and the coral shelves drop into deep blue channels. Snorkel gear rents from the shop across the road; stay inside the reef edge, as the current beyond it is strong, and check the jellyfish net season if you are there in late summer. Shade under the pines is free.

Ferry to Taketomi
Drive back to Ishigaki port, about 40 minutes, return the car or leave it in the port car park, and take a ferry around 13:00; the crossing to Taketomi is only 10 to 15 minutes and boats run every half hour or so. Buy the return ticket now. Bicycle rental shops meet the ferry with free shuttles to the village, which is the easiest way to do the island.

Taketomi village by bicycle or buffalo cart
The village is a grid of white coral-sand lanes between low stone walls, red-tiled roofs and a shisa on every ridge, kept exactly as the islanders decided to preserve it. Ride the lanes, climb the Nagomi tower for the view over the roofs, then take the slow water buffalo cart with a driver who plays the sanshin as the buffalo walks. Lunch is Yaeyama soba at one of the village houses.

5Kondoi Beach and Kaiji star sand
Cycle ten minutes west to Kondoi, the island's swimming beach: a long shallow of white sand where the water stays knee-deep for a hundred metres at low tide and turns milky turquoise. Walk five minutes on to Kaiji Beach, where the sand is made of tiny star-shaped shells; look, but leave them. Catch a ferry back in the late afternoon and eat Ishigaki beef in town.

Tips
Book the rental car for a half day and drop it at the port before the ferry; Taketomi is car-free for visitors, and a bicycle covers the whole island in an afternoon.
Reef shoes at Yonehara are not optional, the coral is sharp and there are sea urchins in the shallows; on Taketomi, sandals you can shake the sand out of.
Yaeyama soba on Taketomi, Ishigaki beef in town at night: the island's few cafes close mid-afternoon, so eat lunch in the village before you head to the beach.
Kabira needs direct sun to glow, so if the morning is overcast, swap the order and do Yonehara first; on Taketomi the red roofs are best from the Nagomi tower just before sunset.
