Whale sharks, a sea bridge and a coral-stone village
For families and first-time visitors staying in Naha or on the west coast who want the north's big sights in one day with a rental car or the express bus.
1Kouri Island and the bridge
Leave Naha by 7:00 on the expressway and turn off after Nago; the drive to Kouri is about two hours. The two-kilometre bridge crosses water so shallow and clear that the sand pattern shows from the car. Park at the beach below the bridge on the island side for a walk in the water, then drive the ring road to the heart-shaped rocks at Tinu beach on the north shore, popular but worth ten minutes.

Churaumi Aquarium
Twenty minutes back around the peninsula is Ocean Expo Park; be at the aquarium gate around 10:30 to beat the coach tours to the Kuroshio tank, where two whale sharks and a school of manta rays cruise past a wall of glass nearly a storey high. Time your visit to the tank for one of the daytime feedings, when the whale sharks turn vertical to gulp. The dolphin show outside is free.

Emerald Beach and the park
The park's own beach is a ten-minute walk north of the aquarium, or two stops on the free park tram, with pale sand and a swimming area netted against jellyfish from spring to autumn. Showers and lockers are on the beach. Lunch is the park's restaurants or the food trucks by the car park; try taco rice, the Okinawan mash-up of Mexican filling on Japanese rice.

Bise fukugi tree lane
Five minutes north by car, or a 20-minute walk along the coast, the village of Bise sits inside a grid of fukugi trees planted centuries ago as typhoon windbreaks. The sandy lanes between the coral-stone walls are cool even in August; rent a bicycle or ride the water buffalo cart at the entrance. The lane ends on a small beach that faces Ie Island across the strait.

Nakijin Castle ruins
Drive 20 minutes east around the peninsula to Nakijin, the fortress of the northern kingdom before the island was unified, for around 15:30. Its curving limestone walls run for more than a kilometre over the hill, older than Shuri and almost empty of people; the view from the top enclosure takes in the whole bay. Cherry trees here bloom in late January. The drive back to Naha takes about two hours.

Tips
A rental car makes this day; the Yanbaru express bus is the fallback: it runs from the airport and Naha to the aquarium in around two and a half hours but skips Kouri and Nakijin, so choose two stops rather than five if you go by bus.
Water shoes for Kouri and Emerald Beach, where the coral rubble at the tide line is sharp, and something closed for the uneven steps of Nakijin.
Nago's roadside stalls sell pineapple and sugarcane juice on the way north, and the aquarium area's restaurants are the last easy meal until you are back in Nago, so eat there rather than waiting.
Shoot the Kuroshio tank from the cafe corner on the lower level, where the glass curves and the crowd thins; the Kouri bridge is best from the island-side viewpoint at midday when the shallows glow.
