The cherry mountain, bracketed by Nara's deer
For travellers based in Nara who want Japan's most famous blossom mountain, and its pilgrim temple, in a single long day on foot and rail.
1Nara Park at first light
Start in Nara before the trip south: at 7:00 the park is deer, mist and almost nobody, and the animals are at their politest before the day's crackers. Walk from Kintetsu Nara along the stream below Kofuku-ji and on to the Todai-ji Nandaimon gate; the great hall is not open yet, but the gate and its guardian statues are enough. Be back at the station by 8:15.

Kintetsu to Yoshino and the ropeway
Kintetsu from Nara to Yoshino means two changes, at Yamato-Saidaiji and Kashihara-jingu-mae, about 1 hour 45 minutes in all; the limited express from Kashihara is worth the small surcharge. From Yoshino station the short ropeway, the oldest in Japan, or a 15-minute walk up the road brings you to Shimo-senbon, the lower thousand cherry trees, around 10:30.

Kinpusen-ji Zao-do
Walk up the single main street of the village, past kuzu sweet shops and pressed-sushi counters, to Kinpusen-ji, headquarters of the Shugendo mountain ascetics. The Zao-do hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in Japan; inside, three blue-faced Zao Gongen statues are shown only during special openings in spring and autumn. Pilgrims in white still set out from here for the Omine ridge.

Yoshimizu Shrine and lunch
A few minutes further, Yoshimizu Shrine has the 'one glance, a thousand trees' viewpoint over the slopes of Naka-senbon, the classic blossom photograph of early to mid-April; in autumn the same slope turns red and in summer it is deep green. Lunch around 13:00 on the street: kakinoha-zushi, mackerel pressed in persimmon leaves, and kuzu mochi, the village's two specialities.

Hanayagura viewpoint
Continue up through Naka-senbon past Chikurin-in, whose garden is open to visitors, then take the steeper path to Hanayagura, the upper viewpoint, about 40 minutes above the shrine. From here the whole mountain, the village roofs and the valley are laid out, and on a spring afternoon the pink runs all the way down. Turn round by 15:30 to make the ropeway before it stops around dusk.

6Kofuku-ji at dusk, back in Nara
The train back reaches Nara around 18:30. Walk the park path again as the deer settle and the five-storey pagoda of Kofuku-ji is lit against the sky; Sarusawa Pond below reflects it. Dinner on the Higashimuki arcade or in the lanes of Naramachi, five minutes south. The whole day is about 8 km on foot, most of it uphill in the middle.

Tips
Kintetsu the whole way, with two changes; in cherry season the trains and ropeway are packed by 9:00, which is why the early Nara Park start makes the day work.
Yoshino is one road climbing about 300 metres: trail shoes for the Hanayagura path, and a windproof layer at the top even in April.
Kakinoha-zushi keeps for hours; buy a box on the way up and eat it at the Hanayagura viewpoint instead of queuing for a restaurant.
Yoshimizu Shrine's viewpoint is best mid-morning with the sun behind you; peak blossom lasts about a week, and the mountain blooms from bottom to top over two to three weeks.
