For travellers who like small, walkable towns with good food, craft shops and a slow pace, and who can arrive by mid-morning on the express from Nagoya.
1Miyagawa Morning Market
The JR Hida limited express from Nagoya takes a bit over two hours through the Kiso gorges, so either stay the night before or take the first train and arrive around 9:30. Walk 10 minutes from the station to the Miyagawa river, where stalls sell pickles, apples, hoba miso and, in autumn, strings of persimmons drying under the eaves. The market packs up around noon.

Sanmachi Suji
Cross the river into Sanmachi, three parallel streets of dark wooden merchant houses from the Edo period, now sake breweries, craft shops and cafes. Look for the sugidama, the cedar-ball signs hanging outside breweries; several pour tastings for a few hundred yen. Try Hida beef sushi or a beef skewer from a street stall while you walk.

Takayama Jinya
Five minutes on foot south of Sanmachi is the Jinya, the only surviving provincial government office of the shogunate, with tatami audience rooms, a rice storehouse and a rather grim interrogation room. Arrive around 12:30 when the tour groups are at lunch. It closes around dusk, earlier in winter.

4Sakurayama Hachimangu and the Yatai Kaikan
Walk 15 minutes north through the quieter Higashiyama streets to Sakurayama Hachimangu, a shrine under tall cedars on the hillside. Next to it, the Yatai Kaikan hall shows four of the gilded festival floats used in the spring and autumn Takayama Matsuri, rotated through the year, with a short film of the marionettes on top in action.

5Dinner and the old town by night
Book a Hida beef dinner in advance, either grilled on a hoba leaf at a traditional restaurant or as steak at one of the specialist places near the station; good tables go by mid-afternoon. Afterwards walk back through Sanmachi, where the lanterns come on and the streets empty; the red Nakabashi bridge over the river is the night photo. The last express to Nagoya leaves in the evening.

Tips
The Hida express from Nagoya is the whole trip in itself: sit on the right going north for the river gorge, and reserve seats on the way back, the evening trains fill on weekends.
Everything is within a 20-minute walk of the station, but the Higashiyama temple lanes are cobbled and sloping; comfortable flat shoes.
Hida beef three ways in one day is normal here: sushi at a stall, skewer on the street, steak at dinner; the sake breweries in Sanmachi pour small tastings, so pace yourself.
Sanmachi is best before 10:00 or after 18:00, when the shop signs are lit and the crowds have gone; the Nakabashi bridge is the classic frame at both times.
