For travellers who use Matsumoto as the gateway to the Alps and want one full, easy day in the town itself, on foot and by local bus.

Matsumoto Castle
A 15-minute walk north-east from the station, or a short ride on the town loop bus. Be at the gate for opening mid-morning, because the keep is climbed in single file and queues build fast. This is one of the few original keeps in Japan, black-lacquered and reflected in the moat, with the Alps behind it on a clear morning. Inside are six floors of steep ladders and an unusual museum of matchlock guns.

2Nawate-dori and Nakamachi
Walk south five minutes to Nawate-dori, a lane of small shops along the clear, shallow Metoba stream, watched over by stone frogs; taiyaki and old-fashioned toys are the specialities. Cross the bridge to Nakamachi, the merchants' street of white-and-black storehouses that now hold craft shops, a sake brewer and a lot of Matsumoto's lacquer and woodwork. Around 11:30 the cafés are still quiet.

3Shinshu soba lunch
Nagano is Japan's soba province and Matsumoto has a dozen good hand-cut soba houses within a few blocks of Nakamachi. Order zaru soba, cold on a bamboo tray, with a side of sansai mountain vegetables or a tempura of the season; at the end the waiter brings the hot cooking water to mix into your leftover dipping sauce. Most shops close mid-afternoon once the noodles run out, so eat by 13:00.

Matsumoto City Museum of Art
A ten-minute walk east along the main road, the museum is unmissable from the street thanks to the giant polka-dot flowers by Yayoi Kusama, who was born in Matsumoto. The permanent collection has a full room of her work, from early drawings to a mirrored infinity space, plus local painters and calligraphers. The gift shop is where the dotted souvenirs come from; even the vending machine outside is dotted.

Asama Onsen at dusk
Buses from Matsumoto station reach the Asama Onsen district in the hills north-east of town in about 20 minutes. Several inns open their baths to day visitors in the late afternoon, and a couple of public bathhouses serve the neighbourhood; the water is clear, hot and slightly alkaline. Time it for around 17:00 so the outdoor tubs catch the last light on the Utsukushigahara hills, then bus back to the station for dinner.

Tips
Everything except the onsen is walkable from the station; the Town Sneaker loop bus is cheap and handy if you are carrying luggage from a Kamikochi trip.
The castle ladders are near-vertical and you climb in socks, so wear shoes that come off fast and trousers you can move in.
Soba shops sell out and close early; if you arrive after 14:00 the alternative is sanzoku-yaki, Matsumoto's giant fried chicken, at an izakaya that night.
The castle with the Alps behind it is a morning shot from the north side of the moat; by afternoon the peaks fade into haze most days.
