Yufuin Hot-Spring Village
A resort train, a steaming lake, a mountain bath
For travellers based in Fukuoka who want one calm hot-spring day in the countryside, done by train and on foot with no car and no hurry.

Yufuin no Mori train
The limited express leaves Hakata Station in the morning and reaches Yufuin in a little over two hours, arriving around 10:00. It is a green-and-gold train with wood-panelled carriages, raised floors for the view, and a counter selling bento and coffee; sit on the left side going out for the river. All seats are reserved, so book at a JR office a few days ahead, especially at weekends and in autumn.

Yunotsubo Kaido shop street
From the station, with Mt Yufu's twin peaks straight ahead, walk the main street north-east for about 20 minutes. It is lined with small shops selling honey, roll cake, hand-cut soba and craft glass, with a foot bath or two on the way. Buy a warm pudding or a kabosu citrus drink to carry; the crowds peak around 11:30, so keep walking towards the lake.

3Kinrin Lake
The street ends at Kinrin Lake, a small pond fed by hot and cold springs, which steams in the morning when the air is cooler than the water. Walk the loop around it in ten minutes, past a small shrine on the water and an old thatched public bath, Shitanyu, on the shore. Fish surface in the clear shallows, and the maples on the far bank turn red in November.

Bungo beef lunch
Around 12:30, walk back into the lanes between the lake and the station for lunch. Bungo beef, the Oita prefecture wagyu, comes grilled over charcoal or as a rice bowl; the alternative is toriten, the local chicken tempura, with a bowl of dango-jiru dumpling soup. Restaurants near the lake are calmer than the ones on the main street.

5Open-air bath under Mt Yufu
Most ryokan around the village open their outdoor baths to day visitors in the afternoon; choose one with a rotenburo facing the mountain and arrive around 14:30. Sit in the water with the two peaks in front of you and the fields going gold. Rinse, dress, and walk back to the station for an afternoon train, or take the local line down to Beppu and Oita if you are staying on the coast.

Tips
Reserve both directions of the Yufuin no Mori in advance; if it is full, the ordinary Yufu limited express runs the same route and the highway bus from Fukuoka is a cheaper alternative.
The village is flat and everything is within a 25-minute walk of the station, so easy shoes are fine; bring a small towel, as day-use baths charge for one.
Snack up the street and sit down for beef near the lake, where the lunch queue is shorter, and buy the roll cake on the way back to the train, not on the way out.
Kinrin Lake steams only on cool mornings, thickest from late autumn through winter before 10:00; in summer the lake is clear and the mountain behind the village is the picture instead.
