For anyone staying in Fukuoka who wants the two classic side trips on the Nishitetsu line strung into one easy day.

Dazaifu Tenmangu
From Nishitetsu Fukuoka station in Tenjin, an express to Futsukaichi and the two-stop branch line reach Dazaifu in about 30 minutes; be at the shrine by 9:00. It is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the exiled scholar who became the god of learning, so students queue to touch the bronze ox and buy exam charms. The plum trees around the main hall flower from late January to early March.

2Omotesando and umegae mochi
The lane between the station and the shrine is lined with shops griddling umegae mochi, rice cakes stamped with a plum blossom and filled with red bean, eaten hot from the paper. The Starbucks halfway along, a tunnel of interlocking cedar by the architect Kengo Kuma, is worth a look even if you do not go in. Pick up a box of mochi for the train.

Yanagawa canal boat
Back to Futsukaichi and an express south reach Nishitetsu-Yanagawa in about 45 minutes, for a boat around 12:30. Boatmen pole flat wooden donkobune for an hour or so through the old castle moats, under low stone bridges and past willows and wisteria trellises, singing as they go. In winter the boats carry a kotatsu heater under a blanket. Free shuttles run from the station to the boat piers.

Unagi seiromushi
The boats end near the old Tachibana family residence, Ohana, and the eel houses around it. Yanagawa's dish is seiromushi: rice soaked in eel sauce, topped with grilled eel and shredded egg, then steamed in a lacquered box so everything is soft and hot through. Century-old houses near the canal end serve it; a lunch around 14:00 avoids the queue.

5Yatai on the Nakasu river
Ride back to Tenjin, about an hour, and walk 15 minutes to the riverside at Nakasu, where the open-air yatai stalls set up from dusk. Eight seats each, a curtain against the wind and a menu of Hakata ramen, yakitori and mentaiko; sit down where there is a stool and order a beer first. Most run until well after midnight.

Tips
Nishitetsu sells a Dazaifu and Yanagawa combined ticket that covers both trains and the boat; buy it at Tenjin before you board.
Duck for the bridges on the canal, and wear shoes you can slip off; some boats ask you to sit on tatami.
Order seiromushi as soon as you sit down; the steaming takes a while and the good houses sell out on weekend afternoons.
The best canal shot is from the low bridges, not the boat, so let one pass under you before you board yours.
