Temple stage, stone lanes, teahouse streets
For a first full day in Kyoto: the classic eastern hills walked north to south, ending where the geisha district wakes up at dusk.
1Kiyomizu-dera
Bus or taxi to Gojozaka and climb the shop street to reach the gate for opening around 6:00–6:30; the wooden stage over the valley is empty for an hour. Drink from the Otowa waterfall's three streams and look back at the pagoda from the far path before heading down.

2Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka
Descend the two preserved stone-stepped lanes around 8:30 while the shutters are still down: tiled roofs, lanterns, the Yasaka Pagoda framed at the bottom. Shops open by 9:30 for pickles, fans and a coffee break in a machiya townhouse.

Kodai-ji, Yasaka Shrine & Maruyama Park
Kodai-ji's raked gravel and bamboo path are a quieter counterpoint at 10:30, then walk through Yasaka Shrine's vermilion gate into Maruyama Park, Kyoto's cherry-blossom lawn. Lunch on the park's edge, a nishin soba or a kaiseki-style bento.

Chion-in & Shoren-in
Two temples most visitors skip: Chion-in's enormous Sanmon gate and squeaking nightingale corridors, then Shoren-in's moss garden and camphor trees ten minutes north. Both are at their best mid-afternoon when the tour buses have moved on.

5Gion Hanamikoji & Pontocho at dusk
From 17:00 walk Hanamikoji and along the Shirakawa canal with its willows, when maiko may pass on the way to engagements; photograph the street, never the people, and stay out of private lanes marked with signs. Cross the Kamo River to Pontocho for dinner on a riverside terrace in summer or a counter kappo any season.

Tips
A taxi to Kiyomizu at dawn costs little more than the bus and gets you there before opening; the rest is downhill on foot.
Stone steps, slopes and about 9 km: comfortable shoes, and a kimono rental only if you accept walking slowly.
Pontocho counters fill by 18:30; reserve, or eat at 17:30 and stroll after.
