1Oshinkoshin Falls
The road from Shiretoko-Shari station runs dead straight across farmland before it meets the sea, and the coastal bus stops at Oshinkoshin about 40 minutes out; a rental car does the same in half an hour. The waterfall splits in two as it comes off the cliff beside the road, and the short stair to the upper lookout adds the Sea of Okhotsk to the frame. Be here around 8:30 before the tour buses.

Shiretoko Goko, the Five Lakes
Twenty minutes past Utoro, the elevated boardwalk to the first lake is free, fenced against bears and open to anyone; the ground trail around all five lakes needs a short briefing in the bear season from May into July and a guide on some dates. On a still morning the Shiretoko range stands upside down in the water. Buses from Utoro serve the lakes in summer and autumn.

3Shiretoko Pass
The road over the spine of the peninsula climbs from Utoro to the pass in about 30 minutes and is open only from late spring to autumn. The car park at the top looks straight at the bare summit of Rausu-dake, and on a clear day across the strait to Kunashiri. A Shari bus crosses to Rausu a few times a day in season; otherwise go up and back by car or taxi.

Lunch and a cliff cruise from Utoro
Back in Utoro by 13:00 for a seafood bowl by the harbour, salmon, sea urchin and scallop according to the month, then a boat. Small boats hug the cliffs to Kamuiwakka or the cape and are the reliable way to see brown bears on the shore; larger ships are steadier if the swell is up. Book the afternoon sailing ahead in July and August.

Yuhidai and the Utoro onsen sunset
Utoro faces west, and Yuhidai, the sunset lookout above the harbour, is a ten-minute walk from the port. The public bath just below it has an outdoor pool looking the same way, so time your soak for the last hour of light; in summer that is around 19:00. Buses back to Shari run into the evening if you are not staying.

Tips
A rental car from Memanbetsu airport or Shari makes this day easy; on buses alone, the pass and the falls will cost you a lot of waiting.
Long trousers and closed shoes on the ground trail: the lakes are bear country, and bells are sold at the field house.
Utoro's harbour kitchens close early; eat lunch before the boat, and book dinner at your inn rather than counting on the town.
Rausu-dake from the pass is sharpest early; cloud builds on the ridge by early afternoon on most summer days.
