Awaji Yumebutai and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
Highway buses from Sannomiya cross the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and reach the Yumebutai stop in about 45 minutes; sit on the left for the bridge and the strait. Arrive around 9:30 and climb the Hyakudanen, a hundred square flower beds stepped up the hillside in concrete, designed by Tadao Ando on the scar of a quarry. The shell-tiled water garden and the greenhouse next door round out the visit; the greenhouse has a separate ticket.

Awaji Hanasajiki flower fields
A taxi or a short local bus and walk takes you up the hill behind Yumebutai to Hanasajiki, a broad sloping field of seasonal flowers with the Osaka Bay coastline behind it: rapeseed in spring, sunflowers and cosmos through the warmer months. Entry is free, parking is not. The tourist information counter at Yumebutai can call you a taxi and tell you the day's bus timings.

Lunch in Sumoto
Buses run down the east coast to Sumoto, the island's main town, in about 40 minutes. Awaji is famous for sweet onions and for Awaji beef, and nearly every restaurant near the bus centre has an onion-heavy set lunch; a whole roasted onion is a standard side. Around 13:00 you have time for a stroll past Sumoto's old red-brick spinning mill before the next bus south.

4Naruto whirlpool cruise from Fukura
Another 30 minutes by bus brings you to Fukura on the south coast, where sightseeing boats sail out under the Onaruto Bridge to the strait between Awaji and Shikoku. The whirlpools form on the turning tide, largest around spring tides; check the tide table posted at the pier and time your boat to it. Boats run through the afternoon and the deck gets wet and windy, so hold onto hats.

5Keino Matsubara beach at sunset
A 15-minute taxi west along the coast is Keino Matsubara, a two-kilometre strand of white sand backed by a grove of black pines, and one of the classic sunset spots of western Japan. The sun drops into the sea in front of you rather than behind a headland. Afterwards, taxi back to Fukura or the Awaji-Shima Minami bus stop for the highway bus to Sannomiya, which takes about 1.5 hours.

Tips
Island buses are infrequent and taxis fill the gaps: photograph every timetable you pass, or rent a car in Kobe, which turns this from a logistics day into an easy one.
Sand at the beach and concrete steps at Yumebutai: trainers you can shake out, and a windproof layer for the boat deck.
Order anything with Awaji onion: the local onion is sweet enough to eat raw, and the beef-and-onion rice bowls are the island's honest lunch.
Time the whirlpools, not the boat: the best swirls are within an hour of the tide turning, and a cruise outside that window sees flat water.
