The Gion Festival is a festival of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto that is said to have begun in 869 with prayers for the end of an epidemic. Over the course of a month, various religious ceremonies and events are held, with the yamahoko procession being the main highlight. The yamahoko procession takes place twice, on July 17 and July 24. The magnificent and ornate yamahoko floats parading through the streets of Kyoto are also called a "moving art museum," and as a symbol of summer in Kyoto, they captivate many people from around the world. On July 17, 23 yamahoko floats parade led by the Naginata Hoko. The spectacular "tsujimawashi" where giant yamahoko are turned at intersections, the sounds of Gion music, and the gorgeous decorations are highlights to watch. On July 24, 11 yamahoko floats parade. One highlight is the "kuji-aratame" ceremony. The order of the procession is determined by lottery beforehand, and during the procession, the mayor confirms that the order is correct. The scene of representatives of each yamahoko reading aloud the documents recording the order is a moment where you can feel the traditions unique to the Gion Festival. The Gion Festival, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a representative festival of Kyoto that has been passed down for over a thousand years. The yamahoko procession, the greatest highlight, captivates many people as a grand traditional event symbolizing summer in Kyoto. Please enjoy the spectacle and splendor from the special reserved seating set up on Oike-dori, the main street in Kyoto.
