It ranks among Kansai's premier cherry blossom destinations and becomes a stunning spring landscape when the trees bloom. Mii-dera Temple, also called Nagarasan Onjō-ji, was established in 686 AD and stands as one of Japan's oldest religious sites with thirteen centuries of continuous history. This main temple of the Tendai Jimon sect combines profound spiritual legacy with remarkable cultural importance and tranquil Buddhist surroundings. Its cherry blossom season draws crowds seeking both natural beauty and sacred atmosphere. During the spring bloom, Mii-dera hosts nighttime illumination, casting magical light across more than one thousand Somei-yoshino, Yamazakura, and Shidare-zakura trees. The glowing blossoms create an otherworldly scene beneath the stars. Admission during cherry blossom season costs 600 JPY for adults, 300 JPY for junior and senior high students, and 200 JPY for elementary students. Illumination dates shift annually depending on when flowers peak. The temple has long anchored cherry blossom tourism throughout the Kansai region. Lake Biwa Canal (Biwako Sosui) ranks among Japan's pioneering canal networks, built during the Taisho era and stretching roughly 2.7 kilometers. Nicknamed the "King of Canals," it was engineered to transport Lake Biwa water into Kyoto for municipal drinking supplies and agricultural use. Finished in 1912, the canal became essential infrastructure—regulating lake levels, preventing floods, and irrigating surrounding farms.
