Choosing a Long-Stay Hotel Near a Hospital in Tokyo or Osaka

The checklist we send hotels

When we book for a medical guest, we ask the property these questions and only book when the answers fit:

• Elevator to the room floor, and the walk from the elevator to the room.
• Bathroom with no step at the door and a shower you can sit in, if mobility is a concern.
• Room away from the street, on a higher floor, with blackout curtains.
• Late check-out or a rest room on the departure day, because appointments end at odd hours.
• A rate that can be changed or shortened with a day's notice, or at most one night's charge.
• Whether a second guest can be added mid-stay if a family member arrives later.
• Whether the front desk will hold a wheelchair, a delivery of medicines, or a message from the driver.

Most properties answer these in a day. The ones that answer clearly are usually the ones that handle a medical stay well.

Flexible dates are worth more than a discount

Hospitals reschedule. A results consultation moves by two days, a second visit is added, a treatment plan becomes a longer plan. If the hotel rate was the cheapest non-refundable one, each change costs money and stress. For medical stays we take flexible rates by default, and we tell you exactly which lines of the plan are not flexible before you confirm.

Two people, one patient

Most medical guests do not travel alone. A twin room is the standard; two connected rooms are better when the patient needs quiet and the companion needs to make calls. In serviced apartments, a one-bedroom with a separate living area does the same job. Whether a relative may sleep in the hospital room itself is the hospital's rule, and many in Japan do not allow it, so plan the companion's bed in the hotel from the start.

Tokyo: how the districts feel for a medical stay

Central Tokyo's business districts are quiet at night, full of restaurants at lunchtime, and within short reach of many large facilities. The western residential districts are calmer, with parks and small supermarkets, and long-stay properties there feel more like living than staying. The bay area is modern, with wide pavements and big hotels, but further from some hospital clusters by road. Ask us which cluster your facility belongs to and we match the district.

Osaka: shorter distances, simpler choices

Osaka is more compact. From the central districts most large facilities are within 20 minutes by car, and long-stay properties near the two main stations cover most needs. For guests whose facility is in Kobe or Kyoto, staying in that city rather than commuting from Osaka is almost always the better plan; the car from Kansai Airport goes directly to either without a train change.

What the hotel does not do

The hotel does not know why you are in Japan unless you tell them, and we do not tell them. They will not hold your medical records, and they should not be asked to. They will hold a wheelchair, a pharmacy delivery and a message.

Tell us the facility's district, the number of nights, whether mobility or diet needs attention, and who is travelling. We send two or three options with the car time to the facility, the rate type, and the answers to the checklist above. You choose; we book; the driver's schedule follows the address.
