Osaka to Kyoto by train — 4 routes, fares + times

Osaka and Kyoto are 55 km apart. Guide to 4 common train routes with fares, times, and terminus details.

JR Special Rapid (新快速) — cheapest fast

Shin-Osaka/Osaka→Kyoto: 30 min, ¥570. No reservation needed. Runs every 15 min. Best value if you're already at Shin-Osaka (from Shinkansen) or Osaka. JR Pass covers free. Best overall for most travelers.

Hankyu Kyoto Line — scenic

Osaka-Umeda→Kyoto-Kawaramachi: 40 min, ¥410. Private railway, not JR. More scenic through older neighborhoods. Arrives in Kyoto's downtown Kawaramachi (heart of restaurants/shopping), not JR Kyoto station. Best for Gion/Kiyomizu area.

Keihan Main Line — to Gion area

Yodoyabashi (Osaka)→Gion-Shijo: 60 min, ¥420. Private. Slowest but arrives right at Gion (geisha district). Skip Kyoto station entirely. Best if Gion/Higashiyama is your hotel area.

Tokaido Shinkansen — fastest, overkill

Shin-Osaka→Kyoto: 14 min, ¥1,450 (Hikari reserved). 2x faster but 2.5x price vs JR Rapid. Only worth it if: you have JR Pass (free), or connecting to/from long-distance Shinkansen without leaving station.

Decision rules

Have JR Pass → JR Rapid or Shinkansen (both free). To JR Kyoto station area → JR Rapid. To Gion → Keihan. To downtown shopping → Hankyu. Budget-conscious → Hankyu or Keihan (¥150 cheaper). Time-critical connection → Shinkansen.
