Official sumo tournaments run six times a year and only in four cities, so for most trips the dates will not line up. The shows here run year round instead: retired wrestlers demonstrate the bouts and the ritual, explain what you are watching, and in most venues you can step into the ring afterwards. Tokyo Ginza, Osaka and Lake Yamanaka near Mount Fuji all have one.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a real tournament?
No, and it does not pretend to be. A honbasho tournament is a full day of ranked competition in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya or Fukuoka on fixed dates. These are year-round demonstration shows by former wrestlers, with explanation in English.
Is food included?
Depends on the plan. Several listings are show-only, with chanko nabe or a bento sold as a separate meal option for ticket holders.
Can children attend?
Yes, and the venues are set up for it. Some shows let children into the ring for a photograph after the bouts.
