Overview

KAI Poroto stands on the shore of Lake Poroto in Shiraoi, about ten minutes on foot from JR Shiraoi Station and forty minutes by car from New Chitose Airport. Every room looks onto the lake. Its bathhouses are the draw: a tall cone-shaped hut modelled on an Ainu building frame, with a source-flowing hot tub and an outdoor bath at water level, and a domed bath lit through an opening in the roof. The water is a brownish moor spring containing plant-derived organic matter. Dinner is a kaiseki course centred on a seafood hot pot with hairy crab and scallops; vegetarian kaiseki can be arranged.
