JR Pass prices rose 80% in 2023 — is it still worth it? Concrete calculations for 5 common itineraries.
7-day JR Pass went from ¥29,650 to ¥50,000 — a 69% jump. 14-day ¥47,250 → ¥80,000. 21-day ¥60,450 → ¥100,000. Suddenly many itineraries that previously "obviously" paid for a pass no longer do. Math needs to be redone.
JR Pass 7-day ¥50,000. Day-by-day Tokyo Metro + JR: ~¥1,000/day × 5 = ¥5,000. Airport transfers (NRT): ¥3,070 × 2 = ¥6,140. Total ¥11,140 << ¥50,000. Instead buy Tokyo Subway Ticket 72-hour ¥1,500 + Suica for extra.
Tokyo→Kyoto + Kyoto→Osaka + Osaka→Tokyo: add up the current single fares from a route search (they vary by train, seat class and season), plus local transit. For this loop the total normally stays well below the 7-day Pass (¥50,000) — individual tickets usually win.
Four long Shinkansen legs: Tokyo→Kyoto, Kyoto→Hiroshima, Hiroshima→Fukuoka, Fukuoka→Tokyo. Add the current single fares from a route search and compare with the 7-day JR Pass (¥50,000) — on this loop the margin is usually small, so do the sum before buying. The JR Miyajima ferry is covered by the Pass, which can tip a close call in its favour.
JR East-Hokkaido Pass 6 flexible days ¥35,000 > beats 14-day national ¥80,000. Or JR East Tohoku + separate Hokkaido Pass. Lesson: for multi-region but focused trips, regional passes win.
Okinawa has NO trains — JR Pass useless there. Spend 7 days in Okinawa (no pass), 7 days on mainland (Tokyo+Kansai+Kyushu). Use 7-day JR Pass for mainland leg only. Time the activation carefully to avoid wasted days in Okinawa.
JR Pass 7-day pays off when: at least 3 one-way Shinkansen trips ≥500km each, OR 1 round-trip Tokyo↔Fukuoka. If you're only visiting 1-2 regions, regional passes are cheaper. Run the numbers with jprailpass.com calculator before buying.
