Two hot springs in one day — one old-style, one modern — with a guide who knows the etiquette and explains each step. This is the experience foreign visitors most often skip for fear of getting it wrong; with someone who knows, that fear disappears.

  • The drive out of Tokyo and back
  • Entry to two hot springs
  • Yukata and towels
  • An onsen-certified guide
  • A bento lunch

  • Massage and other add-ons bought on site

  1. 07:30

Pickup at the hotel. The early start is the point — after ten in the morning an onsen fills up, and a full bath loses exactly the quiet you paid for.

  2. 09:30

The traditional hot spring: wooden building, stone pools, water straight from the source. The guide walks you through washing before you get in — the step foreign visitors most often get wrong and get corrected on in front of everyone.

  3. 10:00

A long unhurried soak with nobody rushing you. The proper rhythm is ten minutes in, then out to cool down, repeated a few times — half an hour straight in the water is the quickest way to come over faint.

  4. 11:30

On to a modern one, with an open-air pool facing the mountains and private tubs for anyone who does not want to bathe communally. Two styles in one day is so you can feel the difference, not to run up a count of stops.

  5. 12:00

A bento in the rest room between the two soaks, the way Japanese bathers pace it — deliberately light, because a full stomach and a hot bath do not sit well together.

  6. 13:00

A tea house, if you want it. Anyone who would rather have one more soak goes back to the bath instead — mid-afternoon is the emptiest the pools get.

  7. 14:00

Into the car for Tokyo. The road back runs through the hills, so sleep if you want to — it is about two hours.

  8. 16:00

Back at the hotel. Leave that evening free — a day of hot springs genuinely makes people sleepy, which is not a figure of speech.

  • Which hot-spring area
  • Whether you need a private bath
  • How many of you

  • 12 or older
  • Tell us about tattoos in advance: we pick a place that allows them or book a private bath, rather than have you turned away at the door
  • Anyone who does not want to bathe still comes along for the facilities, the lunch and the sightseeing
