How does booking work — is it instant?

It is not an instant-confirm button. You send a request at the bottom of this page and we reply with a written quote: the final price, exactly what it covers, and the cancellation terms for that specific trip. The booking exists only once you accept that quote. Slower than a Book Now button, but nothing gets sold to you that is not actually available.

Will we be grouped with other travellers?

No. Every tour in these two sections is private: your party only, your own vehicle, your own host. No sharing, no waiting on strangers.

What if we are shy about bathing with strangers?

Completely normal, and it is the question we get most. Two ways round it: we book a private bath — a lockable room for your group only, which many places in this area have; or you use the shared pools with the guide walking you through each step beforehand so nothing is guesswork. Said plainly, because it helps: a Japanese bath is a very quiet place where everyone minds their own business and nobody looks at anybody. Most of the awkwardness is gone within ten minutes.

Plenty of Japanese onsen still refuse tattooed guests, and they turn you away at the desk without warning. So tell us when you book: we pick a place that allows tattoos or reserve a private bath, so nobody gets turned round at the door after a two-hour drive. Cover patches are accepted in some places, but do not rely on them — we would rather arrange something certain.

Can someone come along without bathing, and what about children?

Yes, and it costs no more and no less: someone who does not bathe still uses the rest areas, still gets the bento, still comes along for the whole day. Children from 12 can join — below that many onsen do not allow the bathing areas at all, so tell us if you are travelling with young ones and we pick somewhere with a family bath. The bento can be vegetarian or adapted to dietary needs with notice.

Where does pickup and drop-off happen?

Pickup and drop-off at your hotel inside the central area of the city named on the tour, included in the price. Outside that area we can still collect you — the surcharge is written into the quote, never added when you get in the car.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. The hour-by-hour schedule above is the version that works best, not a fixed mould. More driving time, a different meal, an extra night, or dropping a leg — write it in your request; the price moves with it and the change is spelled out in the quote.

What languages does the team speak?

Put the language you want in your request. The quote tells you whether someone who speaks it is free ON YOUR DATE — we do not promise a language and then tell you on the day that nobody is available.

When and how do we pay?

You pay nothing before you have read and accepted the quote. Payment method, payment dates and which part needs a deposit to hold a third-party booking are all written into that quote. Nothing appears afterwards.

The traditional hot spring: wooden building, stone pools, water straight from the source. The guide walks you through washing before you get in — the step foreign visitors most often get wrong and get corrected on in front of everyone.

A long unhurried soak with nobody rushing you. The proper rhythm is ten minutes in, then out to cool down, repeated a few times — half an hour straight in the water is the quickest way to come over faint.

On to a modern one, with an open-air pool facing the mountains and private tubs for anyone who does not want to bathe communally. Two styles in one day is so you can feel the difference, not to run up a count of stops.

A bento in the rest room between the two soaks, the way Japanese bathers pace it — deliberately light, because a full stomach and a hot bath do not sit well together.

A tea house, if you want it. Anyone who would rather have one more soak goes back to the bath instead — mid-afternoon is the emptiest the pools get.

Into the car for Tokyo. The road back runs through the hills, so sleep if you want to — it is about two hours.
