This is the island where Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in cultivating pearls for the first time in the world in 1893. At the Pearl Museum on the island, visitors can learn about how pearls are formed and the pearl cultivation process. You can also admire an extensive collection of precious antique jewelry made with natural pearls, as well as various arts and crafts that luxuriously utilize cultured pearls. The Kokichi Mikimoto Memorial Hall introduces the eventful life of Kokichi Mikimoto, who devoted his entire life to the pearl industry, sharing little-known episodes, historical photographs, and his personal belongings to help you understand the man behind the legacy. Furthermore, you cannot miss the demonstration by Ama (female divers) dressed in traditional white diving gear, set against the beautiful backdrop of Toba Bay.
